Summer learning journey- NanoGirl- Scavenger Hunt. | Day 1 activty 1

The Nanogirl activtity was a scavenger hunt. We had to look for the required items in order to do different experiments for the summer learning journey.

We first strated filming ourselves getting the items and putting it back at our tables. If we've found the right items we would have show the camera.

We then did a video of ourselves putting the material together.

This summer learning journey activity was fun.

Presentation

We presented our presentation about our hexagonal prism shelter to P.B.S represented by Mr Wong and Mr Ogilvie.

My group presented our emergency shelter presentation. Our emergency shelter was about a hexagonal prism. When we were finished the teachers asked some questions then gave us feedback.

When all the groups were done presenting, the teachers fired the groups that were bad. At the end there were three groups remaning and all of their prensentation were good.

My group was one of the remaing group. The teachers fired the other group and my group and the other was still remaing. The other group was fired and my group won.

My group's feedback about the shelter was: to have a good understanding of what types of storms could happen in New Zealand and using different materials for the storms. Next time we do this task I have to remember my lines and be confident.

Writing- Filming

We filmed our narrative. The actors used the screen play to practice their lines. We also used our story boards to get the actors an idea of the film and help with their lines.

First the actors practiced their lines so they could know what to say when filing. Then my group practice the lines without looking.

Next we started filming. The actors practiced their lines again one more time before filming. After filming we started editing our videos and putting the scenes in the right places.

I enjoyed filming because I was able to be in the film and able to keep a straight face while filming. I need to practice speak loud because I can't be heard.

Kick Start- Colouring art book

This week I did a kick start of the summer learning journey.

I first watched a video on what to do. Then I went on a website called art colouring book. The art colouring book was filled with amazing art like Christ the redeemed and many more.

After that I downloaded my art and screen shot the original art. Then I did a google draw about my art. I wrote the artist's name which was Paul Landowski. On the gogle draw I put in the original art and compare it to my art.

I enjoyed doing the kick start colouring art book activity because I coloured in a famous art from a different country.

Tamaki Makaurau Names

This week our focus was to finish a task called Tamaki Makaurau, which is Auckland.

We first looked at the names that were familar from the English verstion. T

Next we matched up the place names we didnt know to the other definitons using the Maori dictionary. Then we crossed them off once we had matched them, so it got easier.

I really enjoyend learning new Maori places because I did not know some of them. I need to find out where sme of these places are.

Design and Technology

Our focus for inquiry was to create a net of our protection shelter, transfer that net onto cardboard and use those cardboard pieces to create a model of our structure.

First, our company sketched a 3D net with paper. While doing this, we thought of how to use the paper as efficiently as possible in order to save resources. We then measured the 3D net dimensions onto a bigger piece of paper. Our company decided to draw the parts of the net separately to make the process easier.

Next, we transferred the 3D net onto cardboard and cut out the separate pieces. We needed to use as least cardboard as we could so the other companies could use it. After that, we began using the cardboard pieces to create our shelter model.

We placed the cardboard walls onto the base of the shape and held it together using the popsicle sticks and hot glues to help keep a good foundation in order to keep the structure standing. We also used tape to hold the shape of the walls in place.

Our shelter was a hexagonal pyramid and we found it hard to make because it is a complex shape. Our company found it enjoyable to make and plan out the shelter.

LI: to build shelter models.

Last session of touch.

This week we did a passing drill and carried on with doing three man and two man settles.

We first did a passing drill to warm us up and get ready for a game of touch. Then our coach Mark put in two balls to make it challenging. The idea was to not bump in to each other because we were in two lines faceing each other.

After that we played a game of touch. There were 3 teams because we had eighteen people. One team would sit and wait for their turn in the shelter. The other 2 teams will play against eachother.

I enjoyed playing because I was able to share the ball and everyone in my team touched the ball. I improve in doing two man and three man settles. I need practise passing the ball because I keep on passing the ball crooked.

Kubb chaos

Today we played a game called kubg. This game was for vikings to practice their throwing skills with axes.

First we got in to two teams. Then Mr Wong explained the rules for the game. We had wooden sticks to throw at the shapes. The shapes were used for soldiers and the sticks were used as axes.

Next we played a few games of kubb. The oppnenet team was tring to do the same thing.

This activity was fun.

QAR Questions

Today for reading I looked at a activity called QAR questions.

I first read an article called gravitti art or crime. This book was about why we sould appreciated gravitti art and not ignore it.

Next I read a QAR question list. I had to fill in my answers in each box but not the on my own box.

I then placed in my answers in the boxes.

I found this activity hard becasue I was struggling on where I put my questions. But next time I do this activity I think I can improve.

QAR Question

This week we did an activity called QAR questions.

We first read a story called beat bullying. This story was about bullying and we should do something about it.

Next we did a activity called QAR questions. we had to fill in the own my own box and in the book and more.

After that I placed in my answers in each box.

I found this activity hard because I didn't know where to put in my answers.

Maori Names

Today we learnt how to say maori names.

First Wheae Odie grabed us by table by table I was first. We learnt gow to say new things in maori. If we had the cards we had to say anei. Anei is yes in maori.

Next we did an activity callled maori names toru. We had to match the english names with the maori names. Whea Odie highlighted some of the words blue to give us a hint.

I really enjoyed doing the maori names activity becaause I learnt new things or how to say maori names.

Kapa haka performance

Today we watched a kapa haka group performance.

First the kapa haka group did an entrance ceremony. The entrance was a traditional entrance, the entrance they did was when visitors came to visit.  They used a conch to let the people know they are coming in.

Then they introduced to us a weapon and other tools that are used for dexterity. The tools that were used for dexterity were Ti Rakau and  poi. A poi is a ball connected to a string.

A ti rakau is a stick that is used for wrist and hand flexibility.

After that the kapa haka group performed a haka. Then once when they’re done the boys kapa haka perform as in response or a way of saying thank you.

I think the kapa haka group was amazing because they explained everything they did during they're performance. I really enjoyed perfroming infront of them to say thank you.

Three man and two man settle

This week we carried on with doing two man settles and three man settles from the past weeks.

First we got into three equal groups practiced two and three man settle. We had to run up the field in three man settles, then we run up the field in two man settles. Mark told us to always drive or run up stright and take the touch.

Next we played a game of touch. The game was learning how to play and how to use a two and three man settle.

I really enjoyed playing the game of touch because everyone in my team touched the ball. I was able to do a two man sette with my friend Emmanel. I really need to practice three man settle right because I kept running the ball by myself.

Fractions, Decimals, And Percentages

Fractions are equal pieces of a whole. The numerator is the amount that is kept and the denominator is the whole divided. For example: If I have 1/4, the numerator is 1 because the is the amount that is kept and the denominator is 4 because that is the whole divided.

Decimals are digts that are lower than zero and they are represented by a periodt.

Percentages is a rate of the amount of number. The percentage symbol looks like this %.

Inquiry

Depending on the properties of different materials, they can suit certain situations better.

The materials vary depending on the type of natural disaster.

The materials that are appropriate for a storm are: PVC plastic, chicken wire, plaster, concrete and wool.

PVC plastic is a suitable material for shelters because it is flexible and strong. This material has been chosen to protect against storms because it is firm enough to withstand aggressive wind currents.

Chicken wire and plaster is used to hold the walls and structure together. This material has been chosen to protect against storms because it can give the structure more protection and strength against strong winds.

Concrete is a suitable material and strong material for the foundation of a structure.

This material has been chosen to protect against storms because it provides a strong

foundation for an emergency shelter against storms.

Wool is used for many things, however in this case it is used to absorb water and rain.

This material has been chosen to protect against storms because it prevents people inside of the shelter from

getting wet and causing them to freeze.

It is important to have a good understanding of the properties of materials because this knowledge can be helpful when designing a strong, quality structure.

Writing

Story boards are basic images that show the camrea angels and character movements for each scene.

A storyboard is different scenes or images of the narrative. People add a little sentence to give it more detail if the picture dosen't have enough detail. A person who draws a storyboard knows if he did a good job when someone can tell where the setting is without someone telling them.

There are no words in the image because the main ideas is to show the setting, the angles of the camera, and the characters.

kiwi Sport

Today for kiwi sport we played a game of touch.

First our coach reminded us what we've been doing for the past few weaks. We've have been doing 2 man settles and 3 man settles.

Then we practised our 2 man settle and 3 man settle before we played a game. To perform a two man settle you have to have two people. I have to work out who is the dummy half and the other is the person you could pass to. You do it three times so you could gain some meters. The person who is running with the ball has to plant the ball on the ground and the dummy half has to pick up the ball and give it back to me.

After that we played a game of touch. First we took the touch so we could get meters we did it 3 times. When the other team was passing the ball I intercepted the ball and ran as fast as I could and scored a try.

I really enjoyed playing touch because I scored during that session.

Maths | Atheletics Results

We learned the average with the data sheet from atheltics results.

Average is adding up all the numbers and multiplying them by how many numbers there are. The teams were blue, yellow, green, and red. First place is 4 points, secound is 3 points, third is 2 points, and last is 1 point.

We had to find the average for 182. We know that 182 is 20.2 so 174 divided by 9= 19.33333but we need to take away the seven 3’s. 19.33 has two 3’s and the 3 at the end goes down and the number is now 19.3.

Inquiry

Our focus for inquiry was to determine the materials and the amount of the materials we would use to build a model for an emergency structure.

First, we brainstormed a list of materials to use for our shelter model. We thought about what materials we would use for different parts of the structural design such as walls, protection layers, windows and doors.

We knew that the maximum height of the shelter models would be 20 centimeters, so we applied that knowledge to measure the correct amount of materials and which materials would be best to survive a natural disaster.

Next, we measured the other dimensions of our structure to find out the other amount of the materials we would use. Our structure's dimensions were 20cm in height, 66cm in length all the way around and 2cm in depth or width.

We found out the area and volume of the shelter by multiplying the height by the width. To find out the centimetres cubed as the measurement for the concrete, we needed to multiply the area by 2, then convert that to cubic meters.

I really enjoyed measuring the right height and widht for or material. Our company also found that figuring out the amount of materials needed was difficult but enjoyable.

LI: to prepare materials order for construction.

Reading

This week was a challegeing week for reading because we had three tasks to do.

First we did a task called table mat information. First we had to fill in the piror knowledge. The piror knowledge is about things you already know like the book just like new. The book just like new is all about the tongan kingdom and what the girl does. Then we had to fill in defind box. The defind box is about the definetion of the keyword. Then we had to put a image to match the keyword.

Next we did an activity called making connections. First I filled in the text to self box. Text to self is about things that links to something you have done. I did an making connection about the book just like new. Then I filled in the text to text box. Text to text is something that links to another text that you have read like, Rahi and the patupairere and other books. After that I filled the text to world box. The text to world box is something that links things you know happends around the world.

Lastly I did an activity called synthesis. First I filled in the prior knowledge. Then I filled the new information box. The new information box are facts you've learnt. After that I filled in the new understanding box. The new understanding box are new things you've learnt about the book you have   read .

Volcanoe Names

Today I completed a task called Auckland volcanoes. This task was about matching the english version of the names with the maori names.

First Whaea Odie gathered us in groups to teach us how to say things in maori. For example: Be quiet- Turituri and more.

Next we did an sheet called Auckland Volcanoes. This task was about the Volcanoes in Auckland like, Mt Wellington, Mt Richmond, and more.

Lastly we did an activity sheet about the wheather. I liked activity because I learnt the names of some wheathers. For example: He kapua which means cloudly and Kua Whiti Te Ra means Sunny.

I really enjoyed this maori session because I learnt how to say new words about the wheather.

Screen Play

Screen plays are stories that have been written with the spoken parts.

The actors line is usally center aligned under their name. The lines don't need speech marks because it could help what tone to use.

When doing screen plays the scene and their name has to be in all caps (ABC).  You have to write the things the person said under their names because those are the things the characters said.

Knowing how to write a screenplay is inportant, because if an actor dosn't get their line the movie might be bad.

LI:To convert a story into a screenplay

Maori | Maori Names

Today for maori we did a task called maori names.

First our maori teacher took us one by one in groups. The activity was about left and right but in maori. Maui is left in maori and matu is right in maori.

Next we did an activiy called the maori names. In the maori names activity we had to match the maori names with the english names. For example: Pita- Peter, Anaru- Andrew. Then we marked our sheet. I got all questions right because I used the maori dictionary to help with the maori word.

I really enjoyed doing the maori words activity. I like doing this activity because I learnt how to say Peter in maori.

SSR Selfie

For SSR Selfie I did a book called sports hall of fame.

The author of the book is Maria Gill and the illustrator is Marco Ivancic.

The main topic of the book was about NZ people that were famous who played sports. The interesting word I found was hall of fame.

I really enjoyed doing SSR Selfie because I learnt an interesting word.

Basic Facts Boxes

Today I did a basic facts boxes multiplication. The time I got was 3 minutes and 20 seconds I got 2 questions wrong. I beat my time from last time I did this activity but I think I can do better the next time I do this activity. I almost got all the questions right but I got them wrong.

Reading | Synthsis

This week for reading we did a task called synthesis.

Synthsis is a task about what new information we learnt about the book we've read. The book I read was called white water action. White water action is a book about kayak racing and what happends during the event.

First we had to fill in the prior knowledge. The prior knowledge is about the things you already know about the book. For example: Water is a colourless liquid that forms the sea, river, lake, and rain.

Next We had to fill in the new information box. The new information box is about new things or facts you didn't know about the book. For example: Tasmania is  an island in the South Pacific in the smallest state of Australia Tasmania was  discovered by the Dutch explorer Tasman in 1642. It was named after the dutch explorer tasman.

Lastly we had to fill in the new understandings. The new understandings box is about the new things you learnt. Some of the things I learnt was about kayak races. You only have kayak races in the summer because of how hot it is.

I really enjoyed doing this activity becuase I learnt new things about kayak races.

Maths

This week we discussed what we had learned in week 1 and week 2 with another person who learn something different.

First we got into partners and shared our understandings from the dlos we did in week 1 and week 2.Then we taught our partner what were the things we did about our dlo. My week 1 dlo was about written algorithm. Written algorithm is a strategy that can be used to solve an equation. It can also use place value to find an answer.

My partner (Kruse)  did a dlo about converting measurement, He taught me what were the basic measurements. Measurements are used to calculate the length, width and height using the four main measurements. The four main measuremeants are mm, m, cm, and km. MM stands for millie meters, M stands for meters, CM stands for centre meters, and Km stands for killometers.

Next we had to find a diffient partner and teach them what we did in week 2. My partner did a DLO about multipacation. My partner taught me about The latis method. The Latis method multiplies each digit individually by another digit of a different number. The tens are the top left corner, and the ones are in the bottom left right.

My DLO was about 3D and 2D shapes. I taught my partner what are the vertics and edges of 3d and 2d shapes. I also taught what were the relationships and the transformation of shapes and reflection. Then my partner asked questions about my DLO and what she didn't understand.

I really enjoyend sharing understandings about my DLO with my partners . I think their DLOS were good and they were good at teaching what they did in week 1 and 2.

Kiwi Sport | Two And Three Man Settle

Today for kiwi sport we learnt how to do a three and two man settle.

To perform a two man settle you have to have two people. I have to work out who is the dummy half and the other is the person you could pass to. You do it three times so you could gain some meters. The person who is running with the ball has to plant the ball on the ground and the dummy half has to pick up the ball and give it back to me.

To perform a three man settle you need three people. You have to work out which one is the dummy half and the one is the person who gets the and passes it to the other teammate. Once again you do it three times so you could gain some meters. Aim for one target so you could tried them out and try break the line.

After that we played a game of touch using the three and two man settle.

I really enjoyed touch training because I learnt how to perform a three and two man settle.

Inquiry

This week, our company (Shelters Inc) brainstormed ideas for an emergency shelter design. We needed to think of the structural shape and design of the emergency shelter. We also needed to think about what our shelter will be designed to resist. Our shelter is designed to resist strong winds and water pressure.

What programme did you use?

My group used a design programme called SketchUp, that allows people to design and create anything they want in three dimensions.

What shape did you use? Why?

We chose to use a hexagonal-prism for our emergency shelter design. This is because a hexagon is a very strong shape, and it can deflect wind flow.

What material do you think is best?

We decided to make the shelter out of tungsten because it is strong and polyurethane because it is absorbent. We think these are suitable materials for water and wind natural disasters.

What changes could you make?

Some changes we can make is the size of our shelter. We think that the size could be bigger because the shelter looks small and if it is more spacious, people can put more things in the shelter.

How thick should the walls be?

The walls should be very thick, roughly between a meter thick, and made of tungsten. They should be thick so they can withstand aggressive winds and strong water currents. Also because of the wind or water pressure will not break the wall.

How will people get into the shelter? How big will the opening be?

The entrance of the shelter is 3.3 meter tall and 2.3 meters wide so that in case of an emergency, everybody can enter.

Do you need windows? How big/small should they be?

There should be windows so that the people inside the emergency shelter are aware of what is happening and can identify if it is safe to exit the emergency shelter. The windows should be fairly small, about 1.5 meters so that people can see out of them clearly.

Making connections

This week for reading we did a task called making connections. We had to write sentences about text to text, text to self, and text to world.

Text to self talks about something that links to something you have done. For example: In the book white water action the boy said it was his first time in australia. I went to tonga for the first time to visit my aunty.

Text to text talks about something that links with a text you have read. For example: In the book white water action the boy was always told what to do when racing by his dad because his dad had been kayak racing for years.  In the book diary of the wimpy kid Greg’s brother was telling him what to do when he had his first day of high school.

Text to world talks about things that you know or happend in the world. For example: In the story the boy says that it’s good to encourage your teammates when they’re off their boat or racing. People around the world sometimes like kayak racing or just normal racing.

After that we played against stonefields.  We lost that game, That game was a tough one the score was 5-4. We had to work on a defence and communication  because some of our players werent even looking or listening.

Lastly we played against Pt england year 6 team. We won that game the score was 5-1, That was the highest points we've scored.

Reading

Today  for reading we did an task called the table mat information.

First my group read a book called white water action. After when we were done reading we found 3 keywords. Next when we 've found the 3 keywords, you have to defined it and find an image to go with it.

After we've done finding keywords we had to find 4 facts about the book.

After that we have to write key questions. Key questions are about the author, What was the author thinking before writeing his book. Then we wrote questions we would ask.

I really enjoyed this task because I learnt new things when doing kayak racing.

LI - To build vocabulary

2D and 3D shapes

2D shapes are flat shapes that have face and corners such as squaes, triangles, and circles. 3D shapes have many faces, vertics, and edges sjuch as cubes, cylinders, prism, and sphere. Vertics are where edges and sidesmeet. Edges are lines helping  form a side.

The relationship beteen 2D and 3D are sort of the same but 2D only has 2 dimentions and 3D have 3 dimentions. For example: Sqaue - Cube, Trangle - Trianguler Prsim and pyramid.

Reflection is flipping the shape ot the oppostie way depending on where the shape will be put.  Rotation is just turnning the shape clockwise so you could get another image of the shape.

LI- To self inquire in to an area of maths.

Inquiry

Emergency shelters are facilities that protect people from accidents and disasters such as : Tornados, volcanoes erupting, fires, and storms.

Fire shelters are used as a last resort in an emergency wildfire. They are fire-proof bags that a person has to lay in, however it doesn’t stop the heat from coming into the fire shelter so it can become very hot. Fire shelters are made from aluminium foil.

Underground storm shelters are resistant to aggressive weather. They do not take up much space in a household, and are made to be installed in a garage. Shelters against storms are made in different sizes, some are spacious and some are confined.

Shelters are used to protect people from disasters . Some shelters are only designed for certain disasters.

Kiwi Sport | Touch

Today for kiwisport we learnt other basic skills for touch.

First we did an Activity about planting the ball on the ground. To plant the ball on the ground you had to put the ball on the ground with 2 hands or else it will be an knock on.

Next we did an activity about draw and pass. We got into 2 teams, one team was the attacking team and the other team was the defence. The defence team had to run with 1 person and the attacking team had 2 people so the attacking team could draw and pass. If the defence team touch the person with the ball you would go back to the line.  After that  our coach told the girls to go on the other setup so they could have more turns. The girls group was small so our coach took away boys form our group to join the girls's group.

Lastly, we revised what we did in our touch activities.

I really enjoyed touch training because I learnt how to plant the ball on the ground properly.

Reading | Making connections.

Text to self talks about something that links to something you have done. For example: IN the book cave creatures, One of the spiders were hanging upside down. You could be hanging upside down on the monkey bars.

Text to text talks about something that links with a text you have read. For example: In the book,The book the legend of Rahi, Rahi prepears to save his wife and The book cave creatures, In the book cave creatures the explorer prepears himself before going into the cave full of big spiders.

Text to world talks about things that you know or happend in the world. For example: In the book cave creatures, It says the spiders sometimes hang themselfs like a christmas decoration, Around the world people celebrate christmas by putting decorations around their tree and house.

Building | Maths

In building their job uses geometry and measurement.

Builders use measurement to measure what height and length they need to build their house. Builders can also cut off blocks when their in the wrong place.

Builders also use geometry to know what size and shape the house needs. For example: A triangle, The buiders will need a big enough triangle to put it on top of the house.

Builders use these types of maths to build the right house or building.

Comment thread

A comment thread is having a conversation. It can be found in the comment  section.

When comment starting you need a greeting. For example: Greetings, Ki Ora, and Hello.

Next you give some positive feedback. For example: Thanks  for the positive feedback. I would use this strategy on multiplication to find an answer. Will you use this strategy on division?

Inquiry

An insulator is used to stop the heat from traveling. Five materials were tested for the ability to insulate: glass, plastic, meatal, paper, and polystrene.

The materials that keep things warm are: Plasitc, paper, and meatal. The materials that keep things cool are:paper cups, polystyrene, and glass. To check the temperature we used an thermometer.

The best sulation for keeping things warm is metal.

LI- To determine the insulative properties of materials.

Reading

This week for reading we learnt skimming and scaning.

Skimming is reading sentences to get an idea of the book.

Scaning is looking threw the book for keywords.

We used skimming and scanning on a book called Chris Pither.

First we had to  find 3 keywords and 2 key question. Next we had to define one of the keywords. After that we attributed the image.

Then we had to find 4 facts about the book.
